Siya Makuzeni

Keeps Walking at the 2019
Cape Town Jazz Festival

Thousands of people flocked to Cape Town on the 29th and 30th of March 2019 for the 20th edition of the world class Cape Town Jazz Festival. The event was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and many local and international artists graced the stage.

One of the performances that stood out was of Siya Makuzeni, one of the first black female trombone players in a male dominated world . Gracing the masses with her jazzy sounds, Siya had the crowds dancing and singing along to some of the music. Through the fusion of the Xhosa language and Jazz, her eccentric sound has taken her across the globe where she plays at top jazz festivals and has collaborated with many local and international artists.

Siya has broken boundaries and continues to achieve great milestones in the music industry. She continues to change mindsets and inspire South Africans with the sounds of her trombone. She truly epitomises what Keep Walking South Africa stands for.

Johnnie Walker caught up with Siya backstage to celebrate her musical journey and the incredible strides she continues to make in her career.
